Abstract
The present study increases knowledge of the diets followed by highly active young Spanish males. A percentage of these cyclists followed unbalanced diets (excessive intake of fats and sodium) that should be modified by educating not only the cyclists, but also their parents and coaches. Adequate hydration (water and electrolytes) and the Mediterranean diet, rich in vegetables, fruits, fish and olive oil, should be promoted to ensure appropriate intake of fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids) to protect the cardiovascular system.
