Abstract
► Three model systems for the study of natural pattern generation in isolated ganglia of insects are presented. ► Basic respiratory rhythm generation by a single locust ganglion can be studied. ► Cooperative pumping rhythm of accessory hemolymph pumps arises from a cricket ganglion. ► Fictive crawling in an isolated ventral nerve chord of a weevil larva is modulated by light.
