Abstract

In this paper, a 3-dimensional finite element modelling technique developed by the author was used to analyse the progressive collapse of multi-storey buildings with composite steel frames. The nonlinear dynamic analysis procedure was performed to examine the behaviour of the building under consecutive column removal scenarios. The response of the building was studied in detail and the measures to mitigate progressive collapse in future designs were also recommended.

► Progressive collapse analysis of steel composite frames was conducted. ► Different column removal scenarios were studied in detail. ► Formation of plasticity in the structural steel member were discussed. ► Crack pattern in the concrete slab were discussed. ► Measures to mitigate progressive collapse in future designs were recommended.
