Abstract
A simple approach for force finding analysis of Geiger domes with a circle plan is proposed in this paper. The general equations are first deduced for computing the actual initial prestressing force of domes with consideration of self-weight. Following that, the process for prestress design of Geiger domes is presented. Taking two Geiger domes as illustrative examples, the prestress of the dome is designed and the difference between the ideal initial prestress and the actual initial prestress is investigated. The nodal displacements of domes under self-weight and external load are studied. The results show that the proposed simple approach is accurate and effective to obtain the actual initial prestress of Geiger domes.
