The newer mini-cardiopulmonary bypass system addressed the problem of air embolization. It preserved hematocrit and reduced transfusion during cardiopulmonary bypass, but did not improve outcomes postoperatively. It is unclear whether these benefits outweigh the potential risk of hypoperfusion associated with its use.
