Abstract
Last decades overweight and obesity dominate the lifestyle scene and became a public health challenge. From a historic perspective all aspects we nowadays consider important are already covered like for instance the interaction between human genotype and environment. History encourages us to stimulate moderation but also helps in restoring human dignity, not stigmatizing but putting overweight in perspective within the human context. Clinical interesting side issues like D.I.S.H., the obesity paradox and advantage in survival are put on the stage.
