Abstract
The disposal of spent HTR fuel elements requires a relatively large volume due to the integration of fuel particles and moderator graphite. This can be reduced by separating the coated particles from the graphite matrix. However, the coated particles cannot be disposed without a suitable embedding or backfill. Silicon carbide has been identified as a potential embedding material with less porosity as is the case with graphite. Therefore, a method has been developed to proof the technical feasibility of embedding coated particles in silicon carbide.
