Abstract
The effect of gradual population aging on health is well known, with an increasing scale in the life expectancy worldwide. As the main risk factor for cognitive disorders and dementia is age, an increase in the number of people with these diseases at the population level is to be expected. The aim of this study was to inquire into the population knowledge about mnesic failures, related to the conditions inherently linked to the elderly which occasionally interfere in the quality of life. A review of whether Alzheimer's disease is considered hereditary; if high blood pressure could be a risk factor for the development of memory disorders; if stress negatively affects memory; and if regular physical activity can prevent memory loss was performed. A population-based, analytic and cross-sectional study was performed based on 526 survey randomly administered in the Downtown district of the city of Granadero Baigorria, Province of Santa Fe, Argentina, between April and July 2014. It was observed that the knowledge about cognitive disorders in the population group studied was at an acceptable level. Results show a greater interest of the population over information on health issues.
