Abstract
Antiepileptic drugs should only be started when the diagnosis of epilepsy has been clearly established. In contrast to adult patients, the choice of the treatment should be based on the syndromic approach (except for the elderly with a history of idiopathic generalized epilepsy or presenting with myoclonia linked to degenerative disease) but on pharmacokinetic and tolerability criteria. Regular biological supervision is needed before and after treatment initiation. Particular attention should be paid to side effects and observance needs to be regularly assessed.
