Abstract
In France, the annual incidence of stroke is 1.6-2.4 per 1000 inhabitants, giving about 100,000-145,000 strokes per year with a 15-20% death rate at 1 month and sequelae in 75% of survivors. The gold standard treatment, i.v. thrombolysis with rt-PA is limited by a 4 h 30 efficacy window after symptom onset. Only 2% of eligible patients actually undergo i.v. fibrinolysis.
