Abstract
Idiopathic intracranial hypertension develops in the particular population of young overweight women. It is characterized by chronic headache and papilloedema. Many initial triggering factors have been identified but their mechanisms remain unknown. They all lead to a disturbance of the balance between intracranial pressure, intracranial venous sinus compression and absorption of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). A vicious circle ensues, potentially eliminated by a CSF derivation or lateral sinus endovascular stenting. In most cases, medical treatment and weight reduction lead to favorable outcome.
