Abstract

We study the failure transition from cracking to shear bands in metal plates due to impact loading by meshfree continuum method. The meshfree method ensures the ability to model large deformations as they occur in shear band formation. We model both, the crack and shear band as strong discontinuity and take advantage of the loss-of-material stability condition in order to determine the orientation of the crack or shear band, respectively. The key feature of this method over previous methods is that the failure (cracking or shear band) is modeled in the same manner, allowing for a consistent, simple and robust method. We will validate the performance of our method with several impact experiments of metal plates.

► The paper presents a very simple and efficient method to model failure transition. ► The fracture transition is natural outcome of physical analysis. ► Damage model for Johnson–Cook model is proposed. ► The Kalthoff problem and other impact problems are solved in efficient manner.
