Abstract
The use of mistletoe extracts for local therapy of osteoarthritis is fairly unknown, as there are very few data on this treatment. This prospective case documentation of 30 patients was used to document the influence of local mistletoe-therapy on pain, mobility and local swelling in osteoarthritis. In the 25 cases with gonarthrosis, there was an 80% decrease of pain symptoms. In cases with restricted mobility of the knee-joints, a 75% increase of the mobility was observed. There are several hypotheses concerning the mechanism of action but this remains an open question with need of further investigation. The presented results demonstrate that local administration of mistletoe extract is an interesting and effective therapy of osteoarthritis. However, prospective-controlled studies with a higher level of evidence are desirable for proof of efficacy.
