•We examined public attitudes on gun policy two years after the Newtown tragedy.•Large majorities of Americans support a range of gun violence prevention policies.•Few differences were found among gun owners and non-gun owners for most policies.•Most Americans continue to support universal back ground checks for gun sales.•Americans support banning guns for people with domestic violence restraining orders.
