Nous verrons l’importance de l’hallucination verbale pour l’appréhension clinique des psychoses.MéthodologieEn partant des définitions princeps d’Esquirol, puis des travaux de Baillarger, Falret, Ball, en passant par les débats à la Société Médico-Psychologique durant l’année 1855–1856, nous cheminerons logiquement vers l’œuvre théorico-clinique incontournable de J. Séglas.Résultats et discussionLa finesse clinique des observations de Séglas et la découverte de la fonction du langage au cœur du phénomène clinique de l’hallucination verbale inspirèrent à sa suite nombre de travaux, parmi lesquels ceux de Lagache, Lacan et H. Ey.

ObjectivesThe author here proposes historical points of references relating to “verbal hallucinations” in psychosis. We shall analyse the importance of verbal hallucinations for a clinical comprehension of psychosis.MethodologyStarting with Esquirol's initial definitions, then working through Baillarger, Falret, and Ball's theories, as well as the “Société Médico-Psychologique” debates during 1855 and 1856, we shall logically conclude on the unavoidable theoretical and clinical achievements of J. Séglas.Results and discussionSéglas’ subtle clinical observations, and the discovery of language's function, at the heart of this phenomenon, inspired several authors, in particular Lagache, Lacan and H. Ey.
