Abstract
Tracheotomy has been practiced since ancient times and continues to be a crucial procedure. Contemporary elective adult tracheotomy is described in detail. Intraoperative and postoperative complications can arise with elective tracheotomy. Pediatric and obese patients require special consideration when undergoing a tracheotomy. The emergency cricothryroidotomy and “slash” tracheotomy are discussed. Continuing education regarding advances in tracheotomy procedures is advised.
