Abstract
Otology is a part of otolaryngology dedicated to anatomy, physiology, diagnosis and treatment of the ear's diseases. Routes of otology go back to ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. The fastest developing studies of the ear anatomy were conducted during the Renaissance. In the XVII and XVIII centuries, the first attempts of surgical treatment of ear diseases appeared, especially in life-threatening cases caused by otological complications. Scientific progress in the field of human physiology, physics, chemistry and diagnostic methods paved the way for independent development of otology in the XIX century.
