Abstract
Despite the fact that laparoscopic hernia repair has several proven advantages over open techniques, particularly in bilateral and recurrent hernias, activity remains at a low level in Scotland with the exception of NHS Lothian. In Scotland, laparoscopic techniques are not being used as recommended by NICE guidelines and there appears to be a “postcode lottery” in the provision of this method of treatment. Possible reasons are discussed and action plans are suggested.
