Abstract
Increased demand for procedural sedation in areas of the hospital outside the traditional emergency department and operating room settings has led to a growing trend of these services being rendered by pediatric emergency physicians. We will review the pros and cons of establishing an emergency department-based sedation service, discuss the scope of the service, review practical considerations in successfully implementing and administering this service, and highlight challenges and opportunities for reimbursement.
