Abstract
Viruses are most frequently responsible of acute meningitis and most of the time they are benign. Bacterial meningitis cases are rare but represent a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate diagnosis and treatment. The management of such infections is ruled by a consensus and recommendations. Current biological tools have improved the aetiological diagnosis. Antibiotics are recommended, supported by expert experimental and clinical data, together with the evolution of bacterial resistance. Corticosteroid therapy has now been validated, with a clear improvement of prognosis in some clinical presentations.
