Abstract
Overall, 14.5% of the entire cohort (1,086 out of 7,482 subjects) had diabetes followed for over 10 years. The average age at the discovery of diabetes was 50±11 years, with a sex ratio of 0.87. The average duration of diabetes was 20.7±6.4 years. Diabetes treatment was dominated by insulin therapy. Hypertension was the main associated cardiovascular risk factor. The prevalence of chronic complications was high, with a predominance of polyneuropathy. At the end of follow-up, 75.8% of patients were lost to follow-up. These results highlight the need for better organization of the management of the diabetic patient in our sub-Saharan Africa region.
