Abstract
Circadian rhythms are generated by oscillators operating in the brain and peripheral organs to temporally gate physiological processes to the right time window. For instance, glucose and lipid metabolism, body temperature and hormonal secretion oscillate diurnally. Circadian disorders, either due to genetic defects or environmental risk factors such as shift work and sleep restriction, are linked to metabolic and hormonal deregulation leading to the development of obesity, dyslipidemia and type 2 diabetes.
