Abstract
The purpose of this study, conducted in 100 patients with celiac disease, is the measure of gluten-free diet adherence and its effects on the nutritional and health status of patients. This study was conducted in two health services of the city of Tébessa (Algeria) between 2008 and 2013. Results show that adherence to gluten-free diet is poor for the majority of the patients followed. It appears to be difficult to achieve in most patients for various reasons. The main immediate consequence is malnutrition. Among those aged under 18 years, 16% of boys and 39% of girls presents with thinness. In adults, 52% of patients have a normal BMI, 18% shows malnutritional status grade I, 7% grade II malnutrition and 4% grade III malnutrition. BMI in adult patients is influenced by the level of education and socioprofessional level. The second effect is anemia that affects 64% of patients. The effect on reproductive activity seems real: 7% of married patients did not have children and for those who have had 67% of birth weight was less than 2600Â g.
