Abstract
Evidence from cohort studies and short term randomized trials suggest beneficial effects of food sources of flavan-3-ols (tea and cocoa), anthocyanins (berries) and flavanones (citrus) on cardiovascular health. These findings need to be confirmed in long-term randomized trials, and the evaluation of pure compounds will be important to establish which specific flavonoids and doses are effective. The strongest evidence exists for a beneficial effect of flavan-3-ol-rich cocoa on endothelial function and insulin sensitivity, and of flavan-3ols of green tea on LDL-cholesterol. Regarding anthocyanins and flavanones, more clinical data are still needed to support the association between their level of consumption and the lower incidence of cardiometabolic diseases reported in cohort studies.
