Abstract
One major issue of public health is the increase in chronic diseases, among which diabetes. Beyond actions already performed at community pharmacies, including drug delivery, screening and information about the disease, support for self-monitoring of blood glucose control, The French “Hôpital, patients, santé et territoires” (HPST) law mentions that pharmacists can participate to therapeutic educational programs and actions of patient support. A survey in community pharmacies in Auvergne in type 1 and type 2 diabetic patients demonstrated the lack of knowledge of patients about their treatments and follow-up of the disease, difficulties in management of the disease and the need for therapeutic education. Community pharmacists thanks to their proximity with the patient, have a role to play both in observance to treatment and in strengthening of coherence of messages. The implication of community pharmacists in this educational process requires strong qualifications, coherence with other health care professionals and regular evaluation. In today's period of societal changes and steep evolutions of the profession, the new roles attributed to community pharmacists should allow them to avoid a simple strategy of drug distribution and lead to development of pharmaceutical act.
