Abstract
Health expenditures for diabetic patients are an important collective issue given the prevalence of this condition. This is especially true for type 2 diabetes treated with insulin (over 500 000 patients in metropolitan France) with an average health care cost in 2013 of € 12,509 € or 8,636 € more than matched non-diabetic sample with the same age, gender distribution, and geographic location. This high cost is due to two main posts: hospitalizations (45.7% of patients hospitalized at least once a year, and 30% of the whole expenditure) and the cost of paramedics (22%) which was 2,561 €/patient/year (2,434€ more vs. non diabetics). However, if the average annual expenditure care of type 2 diabetic patients treated with insulin remain high, its growth was contained to the level of the general Consumption of care and medical goods in France apart from some items (i.e. nursing care and patient transportation). A significant part of these costs could be avoided through a better care organization.
