Abstract
The recognition of the role of insulin resistance in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes and the launch of metformin in the U. S., in 1994, followed a few years later by the results of the United Kingdom Diabetes Prospective Study (UKPDS) pushed the drug at the first rank in all countries. Several works are ongoing in several fields more or less related to insulin resistance: diabetes prevention, cardiovascular protection, prevention and treatment of cancer, treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome⦠and the contraindications of the drug have been progressively relaxed on the basis of its long term safety and various benefits
