Abstract
While there has been progress in understanding how genetic variation predisposes to diabetes, there is less of understanding of how genetics influences the drug response. Pharmacogenetics research provides a means to better understand pharmacotherapy. Preliminary results of pharmacogenetics in type 2 diabetes have identified variants that are potentially associated with differential response to antidiabetic drugs. This new area of research needs larger and well-designed genetic studies in order to develop pharmalocogical genetic screening in type 2 diabetic patients, a tool for the development of personalized pharmacotherapy.
