Abstract
A cross-sectional epidemiological study concerning diabetic retinopathy (DR) in type 1 diabetes was conducted from March 1st, 2009, to March 31, 2010, in the Wilaya of Constantine (Algeria). The frequency of DR among 323 patients with type 1 diabetes (mean age: 19.6 ± 8.5 yrs [2-45 yrs]; mean diabetes duration: 7.0 ± 6.2 yrs [<1-29 yrs]) was 22.6% without significant difference between genders. DR was non-proliferative in 18.9% and proliferative in 3.7% of cases. The frequency reported in this study is quite low. The fact that our study was not based on hospital recruitment may in part explain this frequency.
