Abstract
In case of infectious diabetic foot lesions and due to local management conditions we often use an “initial antibiotic therapy” while waiting for microbiological culture and sensitivity against commonly used antibiotics when these tests are available. This study aimed to report the results of culture specimens obtained at the time of hospital admission. From 122 cultures, 114 were positive (93.4%). We could identify 63.0% of Gram negative organisms and 37.0% of Gram positive organisms. Enterobacteriaceae (47.9%), Micrococcaceae (21.8%) and Streptococcaceae (15.5%) were predominant pathogens. Apart metronidazole, fluoroquinolones were the most frequently prescribed drugs. However Klebsiella pneumoniae in 11.1%, Staphylococcus spp. in 12.7%, Pseudomonas aeruginosa in 16.7%, Escherichia coli in 44.4%, Enterococcus spp. in 50.0% and Acinetobacter spp. in 66.7% of cases respectively were drug-resistant.
