Abstract
Two approaches seem promising, however. Firstly, communicating hand-held devices like smartphones with a double functionality: they contain a software implementing the physician's recommendations and are able to solve in real-time any problem the patient may encounter, for example, insulin dose calculation for meals or optimization of food choices. In addition, all data are transmitted to caregivers, allowing remote monitoring and/or teleconsultations. Secondly, with regard to T2D, reinforcement support systems are being assessed in large studies to overcome the relative physician shortage. These systems variously combine interactive programs via internet, coupled with e-mail, SMS or telephone calls with nurses or specialized call-centers.
