Abstract
Smoking is known as an environnmental factor associated with worse progression of almost all kidney diseases as diabetic nephropathy, nephroangiosclerosis, IgA glomerulonephritis and polykystic kidney disease⦠Moreover, it contributes to accelerate development of renal arterial stenosis, whatever its etiology. Renal toxicity of tobacco is supported by various substances (nicotine, acetone, cadmiumâ¦) which exacerbate ischemic injuries, stimulate sympathetic nervous system, and promotes mesangial matrix production. Consequently, implementing strategies to encourage smoking cessation should be a priority in care of patients with renal disease.
