Abstract
Smoking is known as an environnmental factor associated with worse progression of almost all kidney diseases as diabetic nephropathy, nephroangiosclerosis, IgA glomerulonephritis and polykystic kidney disease… Moreover, it contributes to accelerate development of renal arterial stenosis, whatever its etiology. Renal toxicity of tobacco is supported by various substances (nicotine, acetone, cadmium…) which exacerbate ischemic injuries, stimulate sympathetic nervous system, and promotes mesangial matrix production. Consequently, implementing strategies to encourage smoking cessation should be a priority in care of patients with renal disease.
