Abstract
The physiology of β-cell function is a key determinant of glucose homeostasis; its alteration predispose to type 2 diabetes. Insulin secretion is regulated by a complex interplay of metabolic, hormonal, sympathetic/parasympathetic activities and electrogenic events. In addition, interrelations within the pancreatic islets of all hormones secreted (insulin, glucagon, somatostatin, pancreatic polypeptide) contribute significantly to the secretion of insulin in optimal amounts. This review outlines the respective contribution of well known regulators of insulin secretion.
