Abstract
This paper summarizes 40 years of research in the field of metabolic physiology. Considering, as an example, the regulation of a metabolic pathway, the lipogenesis, we describe the different steps which bring us to the analysis of the expression of this metabolic pathway in the liver during development. The two different transcription factors involved (SREBP-1c and ChREBP) in the expression of key lipogenic enzymes in response to glucose and insulin are analyzed. Finally, the contribution of these factors to the development of a pathological condition, hepatic steatosis, is described.
