Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a worldwide epidemic, especially in developing countries including Sub-Saharan Africa. The major part of patients is hospitalized for an acute metabolic complication, mainly ketoacidosis or diabetic foot. The struggle against that burden relies upon the prevention: education of patients and caregivers and upon a multidisciplinary approach and treatment. In Ivory Coast (University Hospital, Yopougon), we have started therapeutic education of patients and the training of some educators. We give in this article the detail of our methods, individual and group education, some specific aspects due to illiteracy of a part of our population and to the huge variety of languages and idioms used in our country. The diabetic foot being one of the most severe and frequent complication, its cost among the highest of the diabetes chronic complications, its prevention and prevention of ketoacidosis are particularly taught to the patients and their family circle. We show some tools and we give some preliminary results. We discuss our difficulties and the perspectives for a future implementation of our process.
