Abstract
The prevalence of diabetes increases in the elderly: half of the diabetic patients are 65 years old and more. Aged diabetic patients (> 65 years) are different from younger diabetics as both diabetes and aging cumulate their actions. Until now, despite heterogeneous clinical presentation and treatment, no prospective study leads to answer if therapeutic goals should be the same, or not, in aged diabetic population, or only in certain groups of diabetic patients, as of younger diabetics. If various recommendations on glycemic goals in aged diabetic patients exist, they differ and are not based on prospective studies. The ALFEDIAM-SFGG French-speaking group for study of diabetes in the elderly organizes a first prospective multicenter study, aimed to follow 1 000 aged diabetic patients for 5 years. The objective of this study is to evaluate the relationship between glycemic control (HbA1c levels) and mortality and morbidity after 5 years in French aged type 2 diabetic patients. The results of this study could lead to define more accurate HbA1c goals in aged diabetic patients, according to age and other cardiovascular risk factors. This study will begin in April 2009.
