Abstract
The patients with type 2 diabetes hardly loose weight, but should not be discouraged: trying to loose is associated with a better outcome. Their dietary habits differ from guidelines: less carbohydrates, and for men more proteins. Dietary protein increase satiety, other benefits have been reported on blood pressure and lipids, but cautious is necessary due to possible renal adverse effects. Low-carbohydrate diets do not provide bad results, with 2-year follow-up in recent trials:“Health care professionals might consider more than one dietary approach, according to individual preferences and metabolic needs, as long as the effort is sustained» [Shai et al, New Engl J Med 2008].
