Abstract
The methods for early detection of diabetes and prediabetes include the oral glucose tolerance test which affords a higher sensitivity than fasting blood glucose or HbA1c measurement. The use of prediction scores is strongly encouraged. Detection screening differs however in the general population and within target populations in clinical settings. Persons with impaired glucose tolerance and/or fasting glucose should be prioritized for the prevention of diabetes. Prevention is based on intensive intervention supporting lifestyle changes while metformin, acarbose and orlistat can be considered as second-line prevention options. The toolkit addresses practical and organisational issues useful for individual and group management. At societal and public health level, practical indications are also provided to involve local and national entities. A high number of trained health professionals or nonprofessionals should be involved. Finally, quality indicators were developed to evaluate intervention of T2D prevention.
