Abstract
Vitamin D is a steroidal hormone which has a well known effect on bone metabolism but also immunomodularity and anti-proliferative effects. It is considered as a good marker of general health status. However vitamin D deficiency is common in general population. Most epidemiological studies suggest a link between vitamin D deficiency and the prevalence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome and hypertension. Results from some trials didn't show significative effect of vitamin D supplementation on glycemia but the progression to diabetes in subjects with glucose intolerance may be delayed. Specific randomized prospective trials had to be undertaken to confirm the interest of vitamin D supplementation in the prevention of cardio-metabolic events.
