Abstract
The progression of cardiovascular risk and stroke is associated with osteoporosis. Bone loss has been suggested as a possible marker for an excess of cardio- and neurovascular death. However, previously published studies did not fully characterize this association, which remains controversial. Osteoprotegerin (OPG) inhibits RANKL (receptor activator of nuclear factor kappaB ligand) fixation on its receptor RANK. OPG has been suggested as a possible mechanistic link between osteoporosis and vascular calcification. But there is limited data addressing its potential role in clinical studies.
