Abstract
There is an early arterial remodeling in diabetes with hypertrophy of the media secondary to collagen accumulation. In animals, a hypertrophy of the adventitia has also been reported, preceding the development of atherosclerotic lesions of the intima. Adventitia hypertrophy appears to be related to collagen accumulation and an increase in the density of vasa vasorum. Recently, we observed in diabetic patients a significant increased thickness of the carotid adventitia as compared to non diabetic subjects. The potential role of the remodelling of the adventitia in the onset of cardiovascular events needs to be further investigated in diabetes.
