Abstract
The objective of the HAPO (Hyperglycemia and Adverse Pregnancy Outcome) Study was to clarify unanswered questions on associations of maternal hyperglycemia, less severe than that in overt diabetes mellitus, with increased risks of adverse pregnancy outcomes. The study was conducted at 15 centers in nine countries; 25,505 pregnant women were enrolled. Glucose tolerance was assessed at 24-32 weeks of gestation, using a 75-g OGTT with glycemia at fasting and 1-h and 2-h post-glucose load. Data of 23,316 deliveries were analyzed. The methodology and the main results are described.
