Abstract
Readmission is a new concept in France, born with day-case surgery and defined as any readmission occurring within 30Â days postoperative surgery. Increasingly, the readmission rate tends to become a quality criterion of medical cares for both the medical profession and the insurance companies. This development explains the generalities and definitions related to readmission after visceral surgery, describes the current scene, explains the value of a control of the readmission rates as a quality of care, risk factors for readmission according to the interventions, the possible means of prevention and what to do when a patient comes to the emergency room.
