Abstract

The aim of the studyThe goal of the study was preliminary verification of the Young's theory of the early maladaptive schemas on the Polish population by assessing the intensity and structure of the early maladaptive schemas, as well as their relationship with the sense of life and the perception of their own well-being.MethodTwo clinical groups, subjects with the moderate depressive episode (n = 32) and with generalized anxiety disorder (N = 36), were compared with non-clinical group treated as a reference group (N = 57). The subjects completed the Young's schemas YSQ-S3 questionnaire, the Klamut's life attitudes questionnaire and demographic sheet, in which they were also asked to rate their physical and mental well-being.ResultsRespondents suffering from depression are characterized by higher severity and different structure of schemas comparing to those with anxiety. For depression sufferers negativism, failure, social isolation and emotional inhibition are more pronounced, and for anxiety abandonment, mistrust, unrelenting standards and negativism are more severe. In addition, depressive subjects have strong relationships of schemas with both dimensions of well-being (physical and mental) and with life attitudes. For people with anxiety there are no clear relationships with well-being, and with the life attitudes connections are weaker and apply rather for life goals than a general lack of personal meaning.ConclusionsPreliminary research results confirm the sense of the theory of schemas, pointing to their potential role in the genesis of the mentioned disorders. Conducted research requires refinement to become the basis of empirically validated therapeutic work.
