Abstract
Over the past several years, increasing attention has been focused on the challenges associated with surgical care delivery in rural settings. These challenges include the relative scarcity of surgeons in rural America, professional isolation, rural case mix, regionalization, and financial issues surrounding rural surgery. This article will summarize these issues and describe the implications for the care of patients with colorectal diseases in rural settings.
