Abstract

Peristomal skin complications are very common and are seen in 80% of persons operated on with an ostomy. Our article gives, in addition to general principles of skin care, detailed recommendations for erythema and leakage, irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact eczema, folliculitis, infections, pseudoverrucous epidermal hyperplasia, dermatologic diseases and special wounds. All topics with information on etiology, patient history, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up and referral. The summary of recommendations can be used as a quick guide to peristomal skin complications in the care of ostomy patients.
