Abstract

Ileostomies and colostomies have been used to treat intestinal diseases for many years. For example, exteriorization of the bowel has been performed to relieve obstruction since the early 19th century—perhaps even earlier according to some reports. The types of stomas and individual maturations that have been described in the literature are varied. In modern times, stoma formation has become standardized, and stoma care is now a specialized field of nursing. The latest advance involves the use of laparoscopy to create ileostomies and colostomies. Thus, this article mainly focuses on the techniques of laparoscopic stoma formation. Additionally, outcomes as they relate to the comparison of laparoscopic and open stoma formation are discussed.
