Abstract
Balloon-assisted enteroscopy (BAE) is a significant advance in gastrointestinal endoscopy. Two systems are currently available including double-balloon enteroscopy and single-balloon enteroscopy. In adult patients, BAE is a validated indication for the investigation of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, but is also routinely used for other disorders specific to the small bowel. Although there is limited experience on the use of BAE in children, the current available literature suggests that BAE is safe and effective for diagnosing and treating various disorders of the small bowel in children.
