Abstract

Experienced endoscopists routinely achieve a cecal intubation in 95% to 98% of cases. Incomplete colonoscopies can be due to stenosis and looping of the endoscope in the sigmoid colon or other colonic segments. Several techniques have been used to resolve incomplete colonoscopy successfully, including the use of pediatric colonoscopes, adult or pediatric variable stiffening colonoscopes, or an overtube to stabilize the sigmoid colon and therefore facilitate the passage of the colonoscope. Double-balloon enteroscopy has recently been shown to be a useful method to examine the colon in patients with previously failed attempted colonoscopy.
