Abstract

Chromoendoscopy is an evolving but increasingly used diagnostic modality in the detection of dysplasia in ulcerative and Crohn’s colitis. The history of chromoendoscopy is reviewed. The characteristics of various dye stains are discussed. Strategies for application of dye stains and the subsequent endoscopic examination are outlined. Implications for our understanding of the natural history of dysplasia and cancer in colitis with these enhanced techniques are explored.
